There is a growing realization of the limited amount of freshwater available to the global population. This awareness along with the recognition of the natural and anthropogenic stresses on the environment including urbanization, climate change, and population growth have caused water users to seek out more reliable water sources. The diffuse nature of groundwater resources make it more accessible and often the only source of water in many arid and semi-arid regions of the world. In fact, the United Nations estimated that more than half the world’s population was dependent on groundwater supplies for their basic municipal, industrial and agricultural needs. It is projected that the demand for groundwater is likely to intensify in years to come. Our understanding of the movement, responses, and interactions of this slowly replenishable resource must keep pace with its use, if we hope to manage this resource sustainably. …
