Über dieses Buch

This professional book provides a comprehensive overview of the modern organisational tool of intralogistics. Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGV Systems) are floor-based systems that are used internally inside and/or outside of buildings. Since the mid-1990s, AGV Systems have successfully penetrated almost all sectors of industry and many public areas, such as hospitals. The technological standards of all AGV-relevant components and functions are explained and numerous practical examples, e.g. from the automotive, electrical and food industries, are presented. Another focus is the practical planning of such intralogistics systems based on the VDI guidelines, including hints and tips for successful project management when introducing an AGV System. This edition has been completely revised, restructured and reflects the rapid developments in technology and markets.

Frontmatter
1. History of Automated Guided Vehicle Systems
Abstract
Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGVS) are an important component of intralogistics. The technological standard and the experience with this automation technology that is now available have led to AGVS finding their way into almost all industries and production areas. The history of AGVS began in the USA in the mid 1950s.
Günter Ullrich, Thomas Albrecht
2. Technological Standards
Abstract
If one resumes the division of AGV history into epochs, AGV development is now in its fourth epoch. The third epoch has left its mark on AGV technology: a stable technology standard has developed with which customer-specific, reliable system solutions can be realised. It is important to note that this standard will continue to exist and be justified in the fourth AGV epoch and will not be replaced, but merely expanded! This chapter is about the description of this technology standard.
Günter Ullrich, Thomas Albrecht
3. Areas of Application
Abstract
After we got to know the technological standards in the last chapter, which are the basis for the many successful AGV realisations in recent years, we now want to look at the common areas of application of AGVs today, i.e. typical systems and techniques of the third era of AGVs. First we will categorise the applications according to processes and then look at examples of use from specific industries. A separate section is then dedicated to the special case of “outdoor AGVs”, in which the special features of outdoor use with a focus on navigation and safety are described and explained with the help of some examples.
Günter Ullrich, Thomas Albrecht
4. The Future of the AGV
Abstract
We have talked about the technology and applications of the previous AGVs in the last two chapters. However, the world of AGVs is in motion more than ever, which will have a massive impact on the development of technology and markets. It would be unreliable or go beyond the scope of this publication to give a quantitative outlook on the development of the markets, which is why we refrain from doing so.
Günter Ullrich, Thomas Albrecht
5. The Holistic AGVS Planning
Abstract
First of all, it must be clear that the adjective holistic is used here deliberately and dialectically correctly. AGV planning is to be presented comprehensively here—as in VDI Guideline 2710, which will be cited several times; in other words, all steps of planning are to be addressed, beginning with the first preliminary considerations and ending with the decommissioning of the old plant. Obviously, we will limit ourselves here to the AGV aspects—there are plenty of general presentations on the subject of project management.
