Particular application of reliability techniques is developing to evaluate dependability (availability, integrity and security) of large process distributed control system (DCS) for a Ethylene Plant. Each critical plant section is associated to own control subsystem which is analyzed taking into account major field unavailabilities contributing to global and section outages figures. Control system availability, (hardware and software) is concerned, evaluating section fault tolerant approach by Stochastic Petri Nets Theory application on computerized control sub systems over a prior extensive standard Fault-Tree analysis conducted all over the plant. Cost-benefit balance is then highligthted as decision-making tool, where reveals important performance in final control derated conditions.
