In Zusmarshausen (Germany), the Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio has opened its first power swap station. At the battery swap station, up to 100 traction batteries can be automatically exchanged per day.

Shortly before its market launch in early October 2022, Nio has opened its first Power Swap Station (PSS) in Germany. The battery swap facility is located directly on the busy A8 highway between Munich and Stuttgart. The power-swap station represents a collaborative project between Nio and Sortimo, the operator of one of the largest and most modern charging parks in Europe. It is about the size of a double garage and designed for around 100 battery swaps per day.

Within 5 min, the vehicle’s existing traction battery is replaced fully automatically with a fully charged example. During each exchange, the condition of the battery and the electrical system are checked. In addition, vehicle owners can switch to a different battery size at any time. With a connected load of 550 kW, up to 13 batteries of 40 kW to 80 kW can be charged at the PSS in a way that protects the grid and the battery without causing typical spikes in the power grid.
