Abstract

This chapter notes the mobilization of professional theatre against Trump from the time of his election as President, and argues for greater academic attention to this form of fiction as political resistance, focusing centrally on recent productions of Chekhov (Cherry Orchard and Three Sisters).
It argues that these theatrical events are mediatized via a fusion of embodied public space and social media, drawing on mainstream and emergent media and theatrical embodiment in public space.
Drawing on the concepts of “premediation” and “remediation” of schemata which can provide emotional/cognitive focus, direction and security to audiences in theatre, it argues that remediation can also take new radical paths, with challenges to Trump in areas of race, ethnicity and migration, class and surveillance, and endangered natural ecology.
