Composites are among the oldest and newest of materials. Paradoxical though this may seem, it is true. Composite materials have been used by mankind since early civilization with the empirical knowledge that when two or more materials are used in combination, the product does a better job than either of the materials alone. Using this principle, clay bricks were strengthened with straw just as today plastics are strengthened by reinforcement with fibres. Nature also creates many materials that are a natural composite. Wood, for example, is a composite material consisting of cellulose fibres embedded in a matrix of lignin.
