Abstract

All types of container handling operations in yard blocks are identified. Their properties are evaluated in order to enable a classification of handling operations. In this sense, it is distinguished between handover handling and re-handling operations. Based on the handling types, self-contained planning problems for container handling in yard blocks are formally defined. First, a general taxonomy for the problem types is purposed. Afterwards, individual problems are stated and classified according to the proposed scheme. The main properties of each problem in terms of yard block layout and yard crane system among others are evaluated and contrasted with the other handling problems for the purpose of comparison. In the end, the problem scope of this work is formulated as the result of this chapter.

The term ‘housekeeping’ may also be encountered in the literature (Carlo et al. 2014).

Yard crane scheduling and sequencing are only considered in terms of modelling for reasons of completeness. Afterwards, they are considered as downstream problems in the hierarchy of yard block optimisation that do not constitute a core aspect of container handling but are rather yard crane problems (see Chaps. 4 and 5 for a more detailed discussion). Interaction effects of sequencing and scheduling with general container handling are investigated within the simulation in Chaps. 7, 8, and 9.

Due to the fact that the SSAP is the only problem on the terminal level and the focus is put on microscopic yard block operations, the SSAP is only considered in terms of the modelling for reasons of completeness. Afterwards, it is considered as upstream problem in the hierarchy of yard block optimisation being at the intersection of waterside and landside operations with the yard area. Moreover, factors beyond the modelling borders laid out in Chap. 3 (e.g., distances between yard blocks in the entire terminal) affect the decision-making within the SSAP increasing the size of the problem considerably. The intractability of an integrated solution on the macroscopic and microscope level is illustrated by the numerical results in Chap. 5.

Note that import and export containers are not separated in the block, thus, landside and waterside operations affect each other. The figure only illustrates the data relationships between the problems.
