Abstract

Part I presented the theoretical framework of this study. This first chapter of Part II describes the design of the empirical study. Section 5.1 specifies the general research interest of this study by presenting the research questions. Moreover, it describes the research design. Section 5.2 discusses the methodological framework and derives conditions and general methodological specifications for the design of the study. Section 5.3 presents how this study was planned to be conducted with respect to the research questions and the methodological framework.

Fußnoten
1
This study used the notions ‘test’ and ‘task’ to address the instruments that were used to collect data, understands measuring as the act of collecting data with the test and a denotes with ‘measure’ the actual score which is generated by applying the test to children and which can be subsequently used for further statistical analyses.

2
Categories of outcome space are also denoted as raw variables in this study.

3
The expression scoring is used as a synonym to measuring, that is, the process of assigning numbers. A scored raw variable is a score variable or a measure.

4
Whenever referring to IRT, this study mostly refers to the Rasch model for dichotomous data. In the case of polytomously scored data, an extension of the Rasch model for polytomous data exists (Moosbrugger 2012).

5
One makes therefore inferences from a non-significant result which is generally problematic in the issue of statistical hypothesis testing. Other programs, such as R eRm (Mair & Hatzinger 2007) bypass this problem by providing a number of tests that explicitly test the characteristics of the Rasch model. This approach is more stringent and more rigorous from a psychometric point of view but results in the elimination of a lot of items.

6
\(cov_{XX}=1\cdot SD_X^2\), so the covariance of a variable with itself is its variance.

7
A model A is nested in model B if you can always obtain model A by constraining some of the parameters in model B.

8
During the estimation process, factor variances is obtained by either fixing it to 1.0 or by fixing the loading of the first factor to 1.0.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude toward Dr. Alexander Robitzsch (IPN Kiel) who helped me not only with the methodological choice for treatment of missing data but also with the implementation in R.
