Development of Hetero-Core Fiber Optic Tip Tactile Sensors for an Artificial Fingertip

Abstract

This report describes a compact tactile sensor based on hetero-core fiber optics for imparting tactile perception to an artificial fingertip. The proposed tactile sensor is as small as an optical fiber tip with 250 μm in diameter, and is able to detect soft bending on a hetero-core sensitive portion caused by contact at the end of sensor. From an evaluation test, it was observed that the sensor measures pushing depth in the range from 0.5 mm to 3.0 mm. In addition, it was demonstrated that an artificial fingertip covered with soft silicone rubber skin performs in detecting contact owing to three proposed sensors embedded, each of which has a spatial sensitive region within 4 mm in diameter.
