Continental Reduces Diesel Engine Emissions Further

Continental unveiled a new diesel demonstration vehicle with a 48-volt drive at the Aachen Colloquium. The Super Clean Electrified Diesel significantly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions.

At the 27th Aachen Colloquium, the technology company unveiled a new version of its Super Clean Electrified Diesel test vehicle. The 48-volt hybrid vehicle operates with two SCR catalytic converters and one electric heatable catalytic converter. "Equipped with 48-volt hybridisation, diesel engines are able to combine their fuel efficiency with NO_x emissions so low they even comply with the NO_x limits currently under discussion for the next, even tougher stage in EU emissions legislation", says Wolfgang Breuer, head of the Engine Systems business unit, Powertrain Division.

Under real driving conditions, the initially Euro 6b-compliant vehicle should achieve NO_x emissions below 35 mg/km, with reductions of up to 10 g/km in CO₂ emissions. This is also accomplished using the EMICAT electrically heated catalyst, which allows the engine control system to switch to low-CO₂ operation mode faster.

Heatable particulate filter for petrol engines

For petrol cars, Continental has introduced a catalytic converter with two integrated electric heated discs. "Due to the positioning of these two heated discs, it takes only a few seconds for the entire catalytic converter to reach an efficient conversion temperature", says Thomas Knorr, Group Leader Technology & Innovation, Powertrain Division. In future, this should guarantee compliance with strict emission limits for both the petrol engine and the particulate filter.
