Volkswagen has developed a mobile charging station for electric vehicles. According to VW, up to four vehicles can be charged simultaneously at the 360-kWh storage facility.

Volkswagen's mobile charging stations enable fast charging with direct current at up to 100 kW. The 360-kWh battery storage consists of recycled battery packs from Volkswagen's Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB). Up to four electric vehicles, as well as electric bikes, can be charged at the same time, with two DC and two AC connections available for the purpose. A maximum of 15 electric vehicles can be charged before the charging station has to be replaced. However, the station can also be connected to the mains, allowing a permanent standard grid connection of 30 kW with alternating current.

The mobile charging station can also be used to temporarily store renewable energy. "This flexibility enables a completely new approach to the rapid expansion of the charging infrastructure. Cities can, for example, find out the most suitable places for a permanent charging point before making major investments in developing the network," says Thomas Schmall, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group Components. The mobile charging stations should also be easily traceable via the internet or an app. The first stations are to be set up in Wolfsburg, Germany, in early 2019 as part of a pilot project.
