The performance of the priniciples of a maximum entropy (POME) in the estimation of Gumbel parameters is compared with the existing procedures, viz., the method of moments, principle of a maximum likelihood, the method of least squares and the probability weighted moments (PWM). Simulation studies are performed to compare the parameters and flood quantile bias. It is shown that POME compares favourably with the PWM and performs better than the other methods. The potentialities of POME in hydrological analysis is highlighted.
