Continental has developed a 3D display which is now entering series production in a vehicle. Hyundai Motor Corporation is using the 3D display, which does not require special goggles, in its new Genesis GV80 SUV.

The new High Line variant of the Genesis GV80 features a 3D display screen. To deploy this new display technology, the electrical/electronic architecture was converted for the use of a high-performance computer design. The cross-domain hub replaces several control units. Continental employs autostereoscopic 3D technology, dispensing with the need for special goggles to view the display. Angled parallax barriers split the image for the viewer and thereby create a three-dimensional impression of dials, indicators and objects. Continental's vehicle interior camera detects the driver's viewing direction and adjusts the 3D views according to the driver's head position. It additionally monitors the driver's attentiveness.

The screen is freely configurable, and contents can be distributed over several displays. Maps can be dragged from the front passenger's to the driver's screen and placed anywhere using gesture commands, for example. When the driver switches to automated driving mode, additional services and apps are displayed on the driver's side as well. Continental is working with the Leia in the United States to develop a new 3D display. Based on the Natural 3D Lightfield technology, the new system will not need 3D goggles or cameras to detect the head position and should be able to provide a three-dimensional image for all vehicle occupants.
