Employee ownership has in fact a long tradition in the UK, practised for over two hundred years in the form of workers’ co-operatives. The arrival of the ESOP on the corporate finance scene has opened up new possibilities for the workers’ co-operative movement which are only just beginning to be tested. The ESOP now offers a technique for converting existing businesses into co-operatives. It is a technique which is flexible, tax-efficient and, most importantly, understood by financial institutions.
