Evolutionary Developments

The political area comprising the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong evolved in three stages, each stage representing an extension of British Colonial penetration and culture-contact between the British and the Chinese. Colonialism, as a form of acculturation situation, creates a particular type of choice environment, influenced by three major factor groups (Vidich, 1952, 1980, pp. 7–16). These consist of elements in the impinging body (the colinising agency), elements of the indigenous society, and elements in the contact situation.
