Abstract

Mobile observation platform is an important tool to obtain the parameters of ocean environment in a large range for long time, but the energy supply for locomotion is the bottleneck to limit its long journey. The Marine Mobile Buoy (MMB) mentioned in this paper can harness the wave energy and propel itself forward. The experiment study MMB driven by wave is studied to get the propulsion property. The mechanism of propulsion driven by wave is introduction briefly. The physical prototype of the propeller of MMB is designed and built. Based on the flow flume an experiment rig to measure the thrust force of propeller is developed. The propeller is hoist by a cable to in a rotation reel. The step motor is used to control the rotation of reel and adjust the length of cable to simulate the heaving motion of buoy induced by the wave. The thrust force is measured by compensating the friction between sliding platform and the guidance bar. The results of experiment are also compared with simulation and agree fairly well. The work can be used to estimate the propulsion property and be helpful for the design of MMB.
