Volvo is electrifying the XC90's model range: Two new petrol-engine models, the B5 mild hybrid petrol AWD and B6 mild hybrid petrol AWD, will be added to the series. The conventional T5 AWD and T6 AWD models will be discontinued.

Just like the diesel engine with mild hybrid technology before, the Volvo XC90 will also feature electrified versions of the petrol engines. In both the Volvo XC90 B5 mild hybrid petrol AWD and the B6 mild hybrid petrol AWD, an integrated starter generator (ISG) and a kinetic energy recovery braking system work in conjunction with a 48 V electrical system. The mild hybrid technology supports the combustion engine during starting and accelerating.

Production of the XC90 B5 mild hybrid petrol AWD will begin at the end of 2019. It has an output of 184 kW (250 HP). The B6 mild hybrid petrol AWD, which will be produced from mid-February 2020, has an output of 228 kW (310 HP). The models will include automatic transmissions and the advanced 8-speed "shift-by-wire" system. The series will be completed by the B5 mild hybrid diesel AWD and the T8 Twin Engine AWD top-end model, which combines a petrol engine and an electric machine to form a plug-in hybrid. All Volvo XC90 engines are now electrified.
