Most of the coastal processes examined in this volume depend on climate, sea level, or both. Over long periods of time, climate has always fluctuated. The next century, however, may see unusually rapid changes because humanity is adding gases that absorb infrared radiation to our planet’s atmosphere, and thereby enhancing the “greenhouse effect.” This entry examines the greenhouse effect, the trends in climate, and expected future changes. …
