The real world is three-dimensional. As a consequence, a system drawing images of real world objects on a display surface has to support 3D graphics. When standardization efforts in the field of Computer Graphics began in the years 1974–1977, the primary goal was a standard for 3D graphics. It seemed pointless spending time and effort on 2D graphics when a 3D standard could cover both and a 2D standard could be easily derived from it.
