1. How to Eliminate the Prevailing Ignorance and Complacency Around Cybersecurity

The increased digitization, automation and interconnectedness of all spheres of life have resulted in many innovations and improvements, such as Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, Robo Advisor of FinTechs, Smart Home, etc., but it also brings with it great risks and challenges. In this article, I shall highlight the challenges of the twenty-first century and explain why there is what I like to call a prevailing ignorance and complacency about cybersecurity. One of the main reasons why we seem to be ignorant and complacent is that we have never experienced a major and damaging cyber incident that has disrupted essential services and led to a loss of life. In the last few years, we have been faced with disturbing and potentially devastating cyberattacks, but we have always, seemingly, managed to contain them. However, this successful containment of cyberattacks has not been achieved, thanks to our technical and organizational cyber capabilities, but rather to the fact that cyber criminals can attain their goals well below the threshold of a cyber Armageddon. This problem is compounded by a massive increase in technological and organizational complexity that is challenging for governments and industries to manage. I will attempt to give best practice examples of how we can overcome this problem and gain a better overview of this increasingly complex world of cyber friends and foes.
