Abstract

This chapter examines the history of free movement within the EU, and in particular the origins and impact of the decision to allow immediate access to the labour market for workers from the new Member States in 2004. It discusses the economic and labour market impacts of migration from elsewhere in the EU to the UK. It then considers the impact of the referendum, and possible options for changes to UK immigration policy after Brexit.
