Abstract

This paper purports to bring out in a brief but coherent fashion the fundamental contributions to economic theory and policy made by Indian thinkers in the late 19th and early 20 th century. We divide this epoch into three distinct phases viz. the pioneering, the nationalist and the modern. We then assess these contributions against the background of two developments in economic theory viz. the unity of science principle and the ascendancy of neoclassical thought. We conclude with an analysis of how this rich legacy was abandoned and argue for its reinstatement in thinking about contemporary Indian economic issues.

This famous lecture delivered at Deccan College, Pune, (originally published in the Quarterly Journal of the Sarvajanik Sabha) has been reprinted in IEA Trust for Research and Development (2000)).

There is an entire branch of economics termed econophysics.

David Hilbert (1862–1943) was an eminent German mathematician, who contributed substantially to the establishment of the formalistic foundations of mathematics. Hilbert’s Sixth Problem (enunciated in his celebrated 1900 Address to the International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris) laid down axiomatization as the criterion for a discipline to qualify as a science.

Interestingly, Markovic (1972) (p. 28) comments that “ All those Marxists who believe that there are some universal “dialectical “ laws of nature, social life and human thought also belong here”.

Thus, all who understand Kepler’s laws of motion understand it in the same way, but somebody who has never experienced a war, will not understand say Anthony Beevor’s book on Stalingrad in the same way as a Russian who has actually survived the siege of Stalingrad.

The famous Italian novel Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) by Lampedusa depicts how the Italian aristocracy of the 1860s retained control over the peasantry by aligning itself with the new urban elite.
