This book expounds on the related technologies of intelligent transportation infrastructure construction. Based on the essential characteristics of intelligent construction, "perception, analysis, decision-making, and execution," the basic structure of intelligent construction technology (ICT) is established. With the integration of engineering construction technologies, the analyses of the essence of intelligent algorithms and the feasibility of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are provided. The book introduces the essential characteristics of Big Data and the Internet of Things and their relationship with engineering construction. On this basis, the feasibility and implementation plan of intelligent technology applications in design, construction, and maintenance are analyzed and demonstrated with engineering examples. The book also combines ICT with intelligent construction talent training, the professional knowledge required for intelligent construction, and the theoretical basis to provide the methods for mastering new technologies. This book can be used by technical personnel in related fields such as highways, railways, airports, and urban road construction to understand and master innovative, intelligent construction technologies. It can also be a reference book for ICT-related college courses.


Chapter 1. What is Intelligent Construction?
This chapter first introduces the essential characteristics of transportation infrastructure, analyzes the relationship between modern information technology and engineering construction, and then introduces the origin and purpose of artificial intelligence from the perspective of the Turing test. Based on analyzing what human beings do, the essential characteristics of intelligent technology in various fields—“perception, analysis, decision-making, and execution”—P.A.D.E. are put forward, and the basic meaning of intelligent construction and the key technologies to be developed at present are given. Finally, taking highway engineering as an example, the main contents of the application of intelligent technology in the design, construction, and maintenance stages are analyzed, and the basic structure of intelligent construction technology of transportation infrastructure is established on this basis.

Chapter 2. Systematic Approach to Representing Objects
In this chapter, the essential characteristics of the systematic approach are given from the perspectives of definition, structure, integrity, feedback, function, performance, behavior, stability, and system model. On this basis, the fundamental problems of the system are given. The technical characteristics of the black box analysis method and the method of mastering the new technology are introduced. Then, the systematic method is adopted to establish the road structure system, artificial intelligence system, and intelligent construction technology system to demonstrate the P.A.D.E. principles. The ability to execute and the chapter’s fundamental principles of building and information platform system are explained at the end.

Chapter 3. Empowering Machines to Learn
This chapter firstly introduces the basic idea of computer simulation of the human brain and analyzes the essential characteristics, implementation steps, and machine learning methods. It then focuses on the ANN method’s learning process, introduces the weighting adjustment process in detail, and deduces the calculation method. A simple example is given. This chapter also includes a brief introduction to deep learning. On this basis, it introduces some other machine learning algorithms, including supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforced learning, etc. It finally analyzes the current artificial intelligence and illustrates the basic principles for applying machine learning in engineering construction.

Chapter 4. Entering a Data Era
This chapter mainly introduces the primary content of data science. It includes the generation and essential characteristics of massive data, the difference between big and small data, causality and correlation, the problem of knowledge extraction in data, data mining, and cloud computing. The basic concepts of edge computing are briefly explained. Finally, data security is discussed.

Chapter 5. Understanding Perception Technology
This chapter starts with the methods of data acquisition, introduces the composition and main technical characteristics of perception technology, expounds on the critical issues of the application of perception technology in different fields, and analyzes the basis behind perception technology and the primary method of learning perception technology. A good understanding of engineering several sensing devices in the paper is briefly introduced. The difference and connection between automatic and intelligent sensing are explained. Finally, the engineering Internet of Things is briefly introduced, including the composition and critical technologies of the Internet of Things, cyber-physical system (CPS), the basic concept of the digital twin, etc.

Chapter 6. Intelligent Engineering Construction
This chapter starts with the essential characteristics of intelligent construction “perception, analysis, decision-making, execution.” It firstly analyzes the feasibility of intelligent technology application in the design stage and the critical problems to be solved. It then focuses on the intelligent problems in the construction stage. Including the intelligentization of the service guarantee system and the intelligentization of each link in the construction process, the main tasks of intelligent maintenance are analyzed, the feasibility of intelligent construction management technology is analyzed, and the basic concept of virtual construction is introduced in this basis. It also provides some main contents of virtual simulation of road engineering. Finally, it introduces the application case of intelligent construction—the implementation process of intelligent compaction and related machine learning algorithms. In addition, the risks of intelligent construction are also discussed.

Chapter 7. The Road to the Future
This chapter first analyzes the main goals of current intelligent construction. It then analyzes the key to realizing road and railway informatization, forecasts the future development prospects of transportation infrastructure, and discusses the application of intelligent technology, including intelligent construction in various fields. The basic features and implementation steps are summarized, the relationship between related technologies of intelligent construction is sorted out, and the relevant theoretical basic knowledge is given.
