Engines — Technology
Abstract
The exploded view shows most of the main engine structure and moving parts used in a four-cylinder in-line engine with overhead camshaft.
Jack Hirst
Lubrication
Abstract
In all modern four-stroke engine lubrication systems the principal bearing surfaces, with the notable exception of the pistons, are supplied with oil under pressure by a positively driven high-pressure pump; other parts are lubricated by splash or mist.

Fuel Systems (Compression-Ignition)
Abstract
To supply the fuel at high pressure to the injectors, small high-speed C.I. engines use either an in-line jerk pump or a rotary-distributor pump.
Jack Hirst
Ignition
Abstract
Complete the semi-pictorial wiring layout of a four-cylinder coil ignition circuit — shown below.
Jack Hirst
Emission Control
Abstract
The creation of some pollution is inevitable when power is obtained by internal combustion using a hydrocarbon fuel; and when an engine is not running in tune an excess of harmful emissions are passed into the atmosphere.
Jack Hirst
Cooling
Abstract
The principle of the heat engine which derives its power from burning fuels and the resultant expansion of gases necessitates the use of some type of cooling system. During combustion the temperature in the cylinder can momentarily be as high as 1800°C. Even when the gases expand and the temperature falls, it may still be higher than the melting-point of aluminium.
Jack Hirst
Electrical Systems — Technology
Abstract
Explain the function of the lettered items shown in the diagram. The letters have been arranged so that the operation of the generator may be logically developed.
