In all modern four-stroke engine lubrication systems the principal bearing surfaces, with the notable exception of the pistons, are supplied with oil under pressure by a positively driven high-pressure pump; other parts are lubricated by splash or mist.

The creation of some pollution is inevitable when power is obtained by internal combustion using a hydrocarbon fuel; and when an engine is not running in tune an excess of harmful emissions are passed into the atmosphere.

Abstract

The principle of the heat engine which derives its power from burning fuels and the resultant expansion of gases necessitates the use of some type of cooling system. During combustion the temperature in the cylinder can momentarily be as high as 1800°C. Even when the gases expand and the temperature falls, it may still be higher than the melting-point of aluminium.
