Abstract

This chapter tells the history of the early indie sector in the UK, focusing on the relationship between the creation of Channel 4 in 1982 and the early British independents. It is a complex history, which involves examination of the lengthy, conflict-riven political and cultural battle over Channel 4, and the new publishing model in broadcasting that it introduced. The early production companies that were created at this time are unrecognisable from the highly commercialised sector that dominates today’s television production landscape. This chapter tells the story of this early ‘cottage industry’. It assesses the ethos and vision behind this formative period, and the structure of independence as a model for cultural production.
