In Chapter 1 we noted how throughout the nineteenth century Jeremy Bentham was the focus of criticism from such different thinkers as Carlyle and Ruskin, Arnold and Morris, and from the pedagogists and dons who laid out the philosophy of responsibility at Eton and Cambridge. In this chapter we will see that Keynes, too, was a critic of Bentham, speaking from an economic and a cultural perspective.
