Abstract

Electroactive polymers contain electron donor and acceptor sites that usually consist of up to hundreds of molecular layers. Oxidation and reduction of fixed sites introduce charged sites into the polymer, which, to achieve charge neutrality, require the ingress of counter-ions from the contacting electrolyte solution and, according to the Donnan relation, the egress of co-ions.
