Abstract

The soil landscape of the Penínusla Valdés region is review based in soil genesis analysis and soil–geomorphic relationships. The main soil types of the study area are grouped into two Soil Orders: Aridisols and Entisols. The oldest geomorphic surface corresponds to a relict terrace level from the Rodados Patagónicos lithostratigraphic unit, with Xeric Petrocalcids—Xeric Haplocalcids soil complex. Pleistocene landforms as youngest terrace levels, piedmont pediments (endorheic basins and coastal zone), and paleo-beach ridge units, an intricate soil distribution pattern occurs. This soil distribution is registered by a soil complex constituted by Natrargids, Natrigypsids, Calciargids and Haplocalcids, all of them with xeric regime soil moisture. In playa lakes of the endorheic basins, the soils were classified as Calcic Aquisalids. The Entisols are developed on Holocene geomorphic surfaces; Xeric Torripsamments in stabilized aeolian fields, and Typic Torriorthents in bajadas (coalescing alluvial fans associated to piedmont pediments). In salt marshes, geomorphic elements, anoxia degree, and vegetation communities are associated to soil type; Haplic Sulfaquents, Sodic Endoaquents and Sodic Psammaquents, are related to the low salt marsh, while Typic Fluvaquents and Sodic Hydraquents are developed in the high salt marshes. The main pedogenic processes registered in the Península Valdés soils are clay illuviation, calcification, gypsification, and sulfide production—sulfidization. As the calcretization process progresses, a transformation and neoformation of clay minerals occurs in the following sequence: smectite—palygorskite—sepiolite. The isotopic composition of δ13C y δ18O in pedogenic carbonate could be used as paleoecological and plaeoclimate proxy indicators, respectively.

Glossar
Chronosequence
A sequence of related soils that differ, one from the other, in certain properties primarily as a result of time as a soil-forming factor
Framboidal pyrite
From French word: framboise, raspberry patterns; spheroidal aggregates of octahedral pyrite microcrystals
Geomorphic surface
A mappable area of the earth’s surface that has a common history; the area is of similar age and is formed by a set of processes during an episode of landscape evolution. A geomorphic surface can be erosional, constructional or both
Lithostratigraphic unit
A body of rocks that is defined and recognized on the basis of its lithology or combination of lithologic properties and stratigraphic relations and not by their inferred age, the time span they represent, inferred geologic history, or manner of formation
Llanquihue glaciation
Sequence of glacier fluctuation for the last glaciation interval registered in the Chilean Lake District from 70 to about 14 ka (marine Oxygen Isotope Stages 4–2)
Marine Isotope Stage 5e (MIS 5e)
Stage in the geologic temperature record determined through the benthic oxygen isotope records from almost all areas of the ocean, between 80 and 130 ka ago. Sub-stage MIS 5e covers the last major interglacial period before the Holocene
Matrix nodules
(micromorphology) Matrix pedofeature unrelated to surfaces. Matrix pedofeatures result from changes in composition of the groundmass; this implies that several characteristics of the groundmass remain visible in the pedofeature. Most commonly the nature and distribution pattern of the coarse fraction are preserved
Micritic calcite
Term used to indicate individual crystals of fine calcite (<4 µm)
Pendants
Coating on the lower surface of a free or embedded grain or aggregate (e.g., gypsum or calcite bear below a pebble)
Ooids
Carbonate grains which commonly range in diameter from 0.25 to 2.00 mm. They are spherical to ellipsoidal with a nucleus covered by one or more concentric coatings that under microscope show a series of concentric laminations
Paleosols
A soil that formed on a landscape in the past with distinctive morphological features resulting from a soil-forming environment that no longer exists at the site. The former pedogenic process was either altered because of external environmental change or interrupted by burial
Pellets
It is a grain (particles that have formed by chemical or biochemical precipitation) composed entirely of micrite. They are elongated with size range between 0.03 and 0.3 mm and generally structureless
Polygenetic soils
A soil that has been formed by two or more different and contrasting processes so that all the horizons are not genetically related
Psammophile plant
A psammophile (meaning “sand loving”) is a plant that lives on sand or sandy soils
Soils complex
A soil complex consists of areas of two or more soils, so intricately mixed or so small in size that they cannot be shown separately on the soil map
