Abstract

The Double Burden of Malnutrition is one of the biggest health political challenges in the world. There is not a single country not affected by it. Amongst other aspects the so-called supermarket revolution has reached all states and traditional diets are disappearing all over the world. For many people highly processed food is the basis of their daily diet. In 2016, the United Nations proclaimed the Decade of Nutrition in response to the importance of nutrition for the performance of national economies and the health of their population. In the past, well-intentioned health prevention approaches often failed because they were driven by wishful thinking as well as ignoring the real world and health and nutritional behavior of the target groups for several reasons. For approaches to become relevant to health economies, they have to rely on a fact-based, reality tolerating analysis and be approached with ideology-free and operationalizable strategies. This also applies to the implementation of the strategies. A clearly differentiated approach must be taken, e.g. regarding the reduction of harmful ingredients or the enrichment of food. If activities would focus on change of behavior without respecting the taste of the population, they would result in a switch to other highly processed food with all its consequences on health only. Therefore, seen from a health political point of view, this would be counterproductive and modern civilization diseases could become an even bigger global health problem as expected by international experts.
