A number of factors have an impact on the quantity and quality of freshwater, particularly global population growth and economic development. In the U.S., the electric utility industry is a large consumer of water resources. Understanding the factors which affect water resource management is important for sustainable development as well as ecosystem management. The effects of past and anticipated legislation in the U.S. addressing clean water issues important to the electric utility industry are discussed.
