Abstract

The adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) design has been discussed in Chap. 10. Although the ACS design is found appropriate for sampling from a rare and clustered population, it suffers from the drawback of losing control of the final sample size. Several suggestions have been made by the different researchers for limiting this final sample size of the adaptive cluster sample. For instance, Salehi and Seber (1997a, b) suggested a two-stage sampling design in which primary units are selected using a conventional design and secondary units within the selected primary units are sub-sampled using ACS. Brown (1994) proposed a design in which initial sample is selected sequentially until the final sample size reaches a specified value.
