5. Negative Trends in the Development of Simulation, Testing, and Prediction in Engineering

Abstract

This chapter reviews basic negative trends in development of simulation, testing, and prediction that includes discussion on the following:
  • Impaired testing in engineering and negative factors leading to the slow improvement of testing methods
  • Trends in using physical and virtual (computer) technology of simulation attempting to emulate field conditions and products
  • Erroneous use of the exponential law of distribution for accelerated testing
  • How this influence on inaccurate prediction
It also shows the following:
  • How current vibration and corrosion simulation methods differ from real-world vibration and corrosion realities
  • Trends in increasing usage of virtual simulation and decreasing physical simulation
  • Trends in publications in testing autonomous vehicles for last 30–40 years.
