FRANCE TELECOM is installing since more than five years optical fibers in the local network. The techniques used in this first generation of optical fiber networks are relatively simple and therefore rather reliable and cost effective. The network structure is a a double star with remote distribution units located between the subscriber and the local telecommunication exchange. The fiber type used is multimode and the associated components are simple optical plugs, couplers and LEDs.
