Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has gotten a lot of attention lately as the auto industry desperately searches for ways to shore up its semiconductor pipeline following the extreme shortages that shut down multiple car production lines. According to asia.nikkei.com, the USA, Germany and Japan have pressed Taiwan to ask its key domestic chipmakers to step up production to solve the global crunch. TSMC is the world's biggest chipmaker with more than a 50-% market share. Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) is the fourth largest chip supplier in the world. Because in-house foundries cost billions and take years to bring on line, automotive semiconductor suppliers have become increasingly dependent on outsidesilicon foundries such as a TSMC. According to Continental, "In actual semiconductor production, the backend is not the bottleneck. The wafers are."
