Über dieses Buch

Urban expansion beyond the city’s administrative boundaries has altered villages to a great extent. These peri-urban villages are experiencing unforeseen changes in demographic, economic, land-use, and environmental characteristics. The concept of peri-urbanization is grabbing the attention of urban planners and policymakers globally. To understand the dynamics of the peri-urban region it is crucial to examine multiple rural and urban characteristics. This book studies major changes in population, land and development with the integration of remotely sensed data and census data for 615 peri-urban villages surrounding Ahmedabad city of India. The chapters of the book are designed to cover key aspects of peri-urban change with geospatial methods. This book offers a comprehensive understanding and importance of analyzing peri-urban dynamics at the smallest spatial unit. It provides a detailed conceptual and methodological framework for the students and researchers to study peri-urbanization as well as for the policymakers to redefine the urban policies.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
This chapter introduces the background of the book. It discusses the concepts of peri-urbanization and its consequences. While extensively researched at macro-levels in the last few decades, it remains underexamined in the context of village-level analyses. The chapter also attempts to elaborate on the book’s theme by discussing the concepts of peri-urbanization with particular reference to India, the literature review, the significance of the book, and the conceptual framework. This chapter is an overture to the peri-urban complexities of population, land alterations, and development in these dynamic regions. A detailed literature review constructs an understanding of the evolution of varying perspectives and methodological advancements over time to study peri-urban dynamics. A section of this chapter also describes the importance of the critical issues which have been analyzed and discussed in this book. The detailed subsections of this chapter will assist in constructing the reader’s perspective on the book’s theme and other chapters.

Chapter 2. Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Population Characteristics in the Peri-Urban Region
Abstract
Urban expansion beyond the city’s administrative boundaries has altered the villages at the fringe to a great extent. These peri-urban villages are experiencing unforeseen demographic, economic, land-use, and environmental changes. Macro-analyses suggest a rapid increase in the population residing in peri-urban regions. Albite, micro-level assessment of major demographic change can analyze predominant spatial variations in the population characteristics. This book chapter explores major population changes during the 1991–2011 period in 615 peri-urban villages surrounding Ahmedabad. Important parameters such as total population, population growth rate, population density, number of households, household density, child population, sex ratio, child sex ratio, and literacy have been analyzed and mapped with various graphical schemes. Moreover, to understand the influence of urban proximity on peri-urban villages, these variables have been studied at three proximity levels as per their distance from the city. In the last section of the chapter, spatial autocorrelation indices and cluster maps have been generated to assess the neighborhood effects.

Chapter 3. Spatial Patterns and Shift in the Components of Work Participation
Abstract
Before merging with the city’s expansion, the rural peri-urban region mainly relies on primary economic activities. Among the major transformations as a consequence of urban expansion, change in land use affects the work participation patterns to a greater extent. Mainly the conversion of agricultural land to built-up and fallow land accelerates the conversion of workers from one sector to another. In this chapter, an attempt is made to explore the characteristics of work participation in peri-urban villages. Various components of work participation have been estimated and analyzed at the regional, proximity-zone, and village levels. Moreover, to understand the influence of urban proximity on peri-urban villages, these variables have been studied at three proximity levels as per their distance from the city. In the last section of the chapter, spatial autocorrelation indices and cluster maps are generated to understand the spatial and temporal patterns of associations in selected components of work participation.

Chapter 4. Spatial Patterns of Infrastructure Facilities and Change
Abstract
The provision of and accessibility to basic infrastructure facilities mainly drive the development of villages. In the process of urbanization, the peri-urban villages provide necessary resources starting from land to labor to the urban area. In these situations, it is very important to analyze whether the developmental processes in urban regions also secure basic infrastructure facilities in these villages or not? This chapter of the book assesses the status and changes in selected basic infrastructure facilities in 615 villages surrounding the Ahmedabad metro city between 1991 and 2011. The analyses include the construction of a composite index, mapping of spatial patterns and changes in infrastructures, the impact of urban proximity on infrastructure facilities, and spatial associations.

Chapter 5. Analyzing Major Land Alteration Processes in Peri-Urban Villages
Abstract
Urbanization and peri-urbanization first occur on land as a structural change and then transform the social and economic characteristics of people living there. The multifaceted transformations have been resulting in unforeseen challenges for rural areas. Thus, analyzing the processes and components of land alteration in peri-urban villages triggered by urban expansion is important. The process of land-use change at macro-levels (city/district/state levels) has been discussed extensively by several experts. However, there is a dearth of research dealing with micro-level analyses. This chapter estimates and analyzes major land alteration processes at village levels using remotely sensed data and various geospatial techniques. The chapter is subdivided into four sections: (i) estimation of major land use—land cover and change, (ii) estimation of SDG indicator 11.3.1, (iii) estimation of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, and (iv) estimation of land surface temperature. These processes have been analyzed at various spatial extents between 1991 and 2011.

Chapter 6. Spatial Association of Population, Work Participation, Infrastructure, and Land Alterations
Abstract
The peri-urban region has been considered as a dynamic interphase of spatially and temporally associated urban and rural characteristics. With the use of remote sensing and GIS, it is possible to study these associations at micro-levels. This chapter of the book explores the possible spatial associations among the population, work participation, infrastructure, and land alteration processes in the peri-urban villages using various geospatial techniques. At the beginning of the chapter, two additional spatial variables, (i) distance of a village from major roads and (ii) distance of a village from major towns, have been estimated. The results of analyses show that the components of the population, work participation, infrastructure, and land alterations are spatial associated and present non-stationary spatial patterns of association.

Chapter 7. Summary, Conclusion, and Policy Implications
Abstract
This chapter of the book attempts to summarize the findings of previous chapters. The initial section briefs with each chapter's key findings, which need special attention. The conclusion section elaborates on possible reasons for changes in various characteristics of the population, work participation, infrastructure, and land alteration. Moreover, a section on limitations describes the difficulties and data problems related to this particular study. Finally, considering the spatial and temporal patterns of key variables, this chapter points out specific policy measures for the sustainable development of the peri-urban villages and the city.
