Abstract
This chapter provides policy recommendations and strategies aimed to improve domestic food production in the Caribbean region and decrease food-import dependency. Improved technical capacity of the Caribbean farmers and producers in terms of quality, regularity of supply and decreased post-harvest losses are essential steps in order to increase food self-reliance in the region. This challenge calls for a revitalized domestic agriculture with improved productivity, production, processing and distribution systems, including labour and infrastructure. Moreover, designed programmes under this policy approach requires a coordinated inter-ministerial approach to support local farmers, producers and consumers. Food self-reliance strategy for the Caribbean countries will require particular attention in promoting policy coordination, coherency and convergence across the region, and it could be a new development strategy aimed to reduce food-import bill and increase technical capacity of local farmers and producers.
