Polyesters are produced either as saturated or unsaturated polyesters. Among the saturated polyesters, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is produced in the largest quantity, and in view of its commercial importance, a major portion of this chapter is devoted to the design of PET reactors. An unsaturated polyester resin usually consists of a polymerizable ethylenic monomer and a polyester prepared from a glycol and a dibasic acid or an anhydride. In the following, the engineering aspects of PET formation are considered first.
