Über dieses Buch

In Poverty from the Wealth of Nations , the author presents an analysis of the evolution of global disparities that goes beyond the earlier neo-Marxist critiques of global capitalism. He moves beyond their narrative by inserting two additional asymmetries into the global economy - those created by 'unequal races' and unequal states. The author analyzes not only the power of markets, but the powers that shaped these markets. More importantly, he marshals cross-country evidence to show that loss of sovereignty retarded industrialization, human capital formation and economic growth.

1. Introduction
Abstract
The asymmetric developments in the global economy during industrial epoch I-roughly the two hundred years ending in the 1950s-were a result not of unequal markets per se, but these dual asymmetries were shaped by two others, ‘unequal races’ and unequal states, whose seminal and enduring impact on the evolution of the global economy has not received the attention it deserves.2

2. Integration and Polarization since 1760
Abstract
Our search for the causes of global inequalities during industrial epoch I will be greatly advanced if questions about the timing of these inequalities, as well as their relationship to international integration, can be resolved at the outset.

3. Theories: Orthodoxy and Dissent
Abstract
When economists turned their attention in the 1940s to economic growth, or more accurately, its paucity, in Africa and Asia, they were at once confronted by a curious inversion between orthodox theory and some hard facts about trade and growth.

4. Sovereignty Matters!
Abstract
A theoretical analysis of the global economy during industrial epoch I reveals that the potential for sustained economic growth in lagging countries was fundamentally linked to their sovereign ability to structure their economic relations with advanced countries.

5. Mapping Sovereignty
Abstract
We will now construct a global map of sovereignty during industrial epoch I, describing the variations in sovereignty across different countries. A review of the historical evidence reveals a strong correlation across countries between sovereignty and economic policy regimes during this period.

6. Measuring Sovereignty Differentials
Abstract
The stage is now set for exploring the economic consequences of variations in sovereignty across lagging countries during industrial epoch I.

7. Epilogue
