Chapter 1. Introduction to the Pavement Preventive Maintenance Technology
Abstract
Preventive maintenance is a new concept of maintenance technology. When the road maintenance department has a good pavement structure or a pavement disease at the initial stage, it will maintain it to prevent the road disease from developing to a deeper level, thereby extending the service life of the pavement. Operating methods and practical methods to keep the intactness and smoothness of the road, improve the quality of the road, reduce the lifetime cost of the road, and extend the duration of the repair or overhaul. This chapter introduces the purpose and significance of preventive maintenance, the background of the implementation of preventive maintenance technology in China, the status of preventive maintenance technology at home and abroad, the overview of preventive maintenance technology commonly used in China and its development trends.

Chapter 2. Technical Guide for the Pavement Preventive Maintenance
Abstract
The preventive maintenance technical guide is a guideline and normative document for the preventive maintenance of asphalt pavement. It can improve the level of maintenance technology of asphalt pavement, so as to maintain and improve the performance of pavement, extend the overhaul period of the pavement, and reduce the life cycle maintenance of the pavement. Cost. The technical guidelines in this chapter include general principles, terms and symbols, pavement maintenance expectations, preventive maintenance decisions, post-assessment evaluation of preventive maintenance effects, and cycle life cost-benefit analysis.

Chapter 3. Crack Filling and Crack Seal Band
Abstract
Cracks are one of the common diseases of asphalt pavement in our country. “Cracks must be filled” is the basic requirement for preventive maintenance of asphalt pavement. There are two main methods for crack treatment. One is crack filling. Crack filling is an internationally commonly used method for crack treatment. The second is the crack seal band. This method is not widely used in foreign countries, but it has been widely used in China. This method is used in half of the crack treatment projects. The practice has proved that this method can improve construction efficiency and reduce the occurrence of secondary diseases compared with crack sealing. This chapter mainly introduces the materials, construction equipment, construction steps, operating conditions, indoor test methods, and quality inspection and acceptance of these two technologies.

Chapter 4. Fog Seal and Mastic Seal
Abstract
Fog seal is a pavement preventive maintenance technology that uses a special fogging material to spray on the asphalt pavement surface in a mist shape, closing part of the micro-cracks and pores on the asphalt pavement to prevent water from aging, and to improve the appearance of the pavement. With the development of mist seal technology, reducing agent seals (regenerant seals), sand fog seal, mastic seal, etc. have appeared one after another. Fog seal technology is developing from the original single water sealing function to the multifunctional direction of restoring asphalt performance and improving the anti-sliding performance of the pavement. This chapter mainly introduces the materials, construction equipment, construction steps, conditions of use and quality inspection and acceptance of the fog seal (including sand fog seal) and slurry seal.

Chapter 5. Chip Seal and Fiber Seal
Abstract
The chip seal refers to the technology of using the layer-pave method to directly spread asphalt binder and crushed stone with single particle size, and then form a thin layer after rolling. The asphalt in the chip seal is covered with a continuous film on the surface of the underlying layer, so it can effectively prevent the road surface from seeping underwater and reduce road water damage; it has a good follower deformation ability and can adapt to the relatively poor underlying layer conditions; The stone in the gravel seal is directly exposed on the road surface, so it has excellent anti-sliding performance and abrasion resistance. Fiber seal is an upgraded version of the chip seal. It refers to the use of synchronous fiber seal construction equipment, spraying two layers of asphalt cement and a layer of glass fiber at the same time, and then spread the crushed stones on it, forming new wear after rolling. Layer or stress-absorbing layer (SAMI) is a rapid pavement maintenance technology. Compared with the crushed stone seal layer, the fiber seal has a better ability to prevent reflection cracks due to the addition of glass fiber. This chapter mainly introduces the material, construction, construction equipment, construction process, use conditions, quality inspection and acceptance of chip seal and fiber seal.

Chapter 6. Slurry Seal and Micro-surfacing
Abstract
The slurry seal uses a slurry seal paver to spread the emulsified asphalt, coarse and fine aggregates, fillers, water, and additives according to the design ratio into a thin layer technology that is spread on the original road surface. It has construction Fast, low cost, wide use, low energy consumption and so on. The micro-surfacing is an upgraded version of the slurry seal technology. The two technologies are similar, but the equipment and material requirements at the micro-surfacing are higher than the slurry seal, and its performance is also better than the slurry seal. This chapter mainly introduces the materials, design, construction, quality inspection and acceptance of the slurry seal and micro-surfacing.

Chapter 7. Thin Overlay and Ultra-Thin Overlay
Abstract
Thin overlay is a thinner overlay compared to traditional overlay (usually more than 40 mm thick). Generally, the hot-mixed asphalt concrete cover with a compacted thickness of 30 mm ± 5 mm is called a thin overlay. The main functions of the thin cover are to improve the flatness, restore the surface roughness, make the original surface damage (such as potholes, cracks, ruts, etc.) of the pavement to a certain extent, and extend the service life of the pavement. The ultra-thin overlay is an upgraded version of the technology of the thin overlay. The ultra-thin overlay can greatly reduce the cost of pavement maintenance engineering under the premise of achieving the same performance of the road surface, so it has gradually replaced the thin overlay technology. At present, the ultra-thin overlay commonly used in China can be divided into three categories, including:
1.
Ultra-thin overlay technology using modified emulsified asphalt and open grading (represented by Shell Novachip);

2.
Using warm mixing technology and dense grading Ultra-thin overlay;

3.
Ultra-thin overlay with rubber asphalt. This chapter mainly introduces materials, design, construction, construction quality control, quality inspection and acceptance of the thin overlay and ultra-thin overlay.

Chapter 8. In-Place Hot Recycling for Asphalt Pavement
Abstract
In-place hot recycling for asphalt pavement refers to the use of special in situ thermal regeneration equipment to heat and loosen the asphalt pavement in situ, and mix a certain amount of new asphalt, new aggregate, new asphalt mixture or regeneration agent on-site. State mixing, paving, rolling and other processes can realize the technology of regenerating old asphalt pavement in the range of 20–30 mm at one time, which is suitable for the preventive maintenance of highway asphalt pavement and the treatment of the original pavement in front of the overlay. This chapter mainly introduces materials for the in-place hot recycling for asphalt pavement, construction process, and precautions, suitable conditions, quality inspection and acceptance, etc.

Chapter 9. Original Road Surface Disease Treatment
Abstract
The basic requirements of preventive maintenance for road conditions are sufficient pavement structural strength, good road conditions, and relatively smooth road surfaces. Corresponding to non-structural diseases such as cracks, potholes, hugs, looseness, and oil flooding at local locations, pre-treatment should be performed to meet the requirements of preventive maintenance on road conditions. This chapter mainly introduces the materials used in the cold repair method of asphalt pavements: cold repair asphalt mixture. The materials, test methods, and construction technology of cold filling are introduced in detail.
