Despite the great theoretical and practical importance which must be attached to a division of application domains into problem classes, this subject has been rather neglected in the past. In many introductory books, such as [Jackson 86]

problem classes and problem-specific methods of solution are not treated. Even in the latest volume of the “Handbook of Artificial Intelligence” (1989), only basic techniques are described in the chapter on expert systems, and on the subject of problem classes it is stated:
“We lack a robust taxonomy of problem types (among the most complete so far is Chandrasekaran 1986)

so the individual examples still provide a better characterization of the types of problem than general descriptions.” [Buchanan 89, p. 183f].
