Does, or indeed can, a robot have consciousness? Can it have volition akin to human agents? Or is it the case that consciousness and the ability to will are the result of complex neurobiological processes, thus commending the domain of cognisance to humans alone? Such involute questions, quite naturally, motivate and inform questions in Islamic theological discourse about the nature of man, the ontology of volition, and, ultimately, what it means to be the subject of ethical considerations. Traditional Islamic theological accounts considered volition and the intellect to be linked in a way so as to allow the human agent to direct his consciousness to the world of action. In fact, it is because of this triumvirate (viz., consciousness, intellect, volition) and how they sit in relation, one to the other, that man is considered the recipient of ethical responsibility. …
