This book analyses the relationships among product safety strategy and culture, concurrent engineering, new product development (NPD) processes and product safety performance. Product safety is a matter of enormous economic and societal concern, given the safety risks to consumers and the financial risks to producers. Nevertheless, a thorough conceptual understanding of the effects of NPD policies and practices is still largely missing, as several large-scale trends have made clarifying the role of product safety in its socio-economic context difficult, including: the rise of consumerism and the shift in the balance of power from manufacturers to customers and regulators; the internationalization of value chains and the fragmentation of markets worldwide; and technological change leading to a sophistication of products that rendered average consumers increasingly unaware of risk and potential accidents.

This volume sets out to close the gaps among research, practice and policy, with an emphasis on advocating responsible product innovation. Through an in-depth study of the durable juvenile products industry, the authors discover important relationships, for example that top management involvement, safety-first culture and robust NPD processes are paramount in increasing product safety and decreasing product recalls in firms. On the other end of the spectrum, concurrent engineering does not automatically lead to product safety, they found no “magic bullet” through which product safety can be tied to the use of a particular tool, skill, or practice. Offering a dynamic framework for aligning the interests of multiple stakeholders, including manufacturers, regulators, and consumers, the authors provide a clearer understanding of product safety and its implications for scholars, students, policy makers, and practitioners in the areas of innovation management, product management, R&D management, and responsible research and innovation.

Chapter 1. Introduction: Better Safe than Sorry
Abstract
Product safety is defined as whether the use of a product, under normal or reasonably foreseeable condition of use, including duration, involves any risk of injury or damage to health of users or damage to property or environment. Insufficient product safety has grave implications for individuals, companies, and occasionally society as we know it. We investigate what companies that design, develop, and manufacture products can do to improve product safety. Strategic product safety management is central to the emerging field of “responsible innovation,” especially responsible product innovation, as the principal focus of our work.

Chapter 2. Literature Review
Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the research on the relationship between product innovation (especially new product development or NPD) and product safety performance. Few empirical studies investigated the issue of product safety in product innovation. Most of the product safety management literature is prescriptive and focuses on the technical aspects of safety management such as hazard analysis and risk analysis. In this chapter, we clarify the relationships between product safety strategy, product safety culture, concurrent engineering (CE), the new product development (NPD) process, and product safety performance.

Chapter 3. Conceptual Model and Hypotheses
Abstract
This chapter develops the conceptual model that maps how the product safety context and product innovation affect product safety performance. The conceptual model is based on the MBNQA framework, the EFQM excellence framework, the innovation diamond, and conceptualizations of culture. We arrive at 12 hypotheses relating how internal context—such as product safety strategy and product safety culture—affects NPD practices (concurrent engineering and the NPD process) and how a firm structures NPD processes, supporting functions and activities (practices) for improving overall product safety.

Chapter 4. Methodology
Abstract
This chapter covers the research design, the selection of the sample, the survey instrument development, data collection and analysis for hypotheses testing, and in-depth interviews in our research on product safety as the result of various internal factors of product development in manufacturing companies. Because this study is both exploratory and confirmatory in nature, we considered both a large-scale survey and a series of in-depth interview. Structural equation modeling on data from 255 survey samples from 126 companies was used to analyze the relationships between product safety strategy, product safety culture, concurrent engineering, new product development process, and product safety performance. In-depth interview findings from 33 companies helped explain the quantitative results and facilitate triangulation analysis between the quantitative and qualitative results.

Chapter 5. Quantitative Results
Abstract
This chapter presents the results of our data analysis procedures on the 12 hypotheses about responsible product innovation as described in Chap. 4 on methodology. Specifically, measurement model and structural model assessment was carried out to test hypotheses 1 through 8, MANOVA was performed to evaluate hypotheses 9 and 10, and multigroup analysis was conducted to test hypotheses 11 and 12. Eight of the 12 main hypotheses are supported. Product safety strategy, product safety culture, and NPD process are predictors of product safety performance, but concurrent engineering is not significantly related to product safety.

Chapter 6. Qualitative Results
Abstract
This chapter presents the results of in-depth interviews with 40 senior managers from 33 firms, the observations in some firms interviewed, and a thorough review of secondary information. The results are summarized in four key themes: product safety strategy, product safety culture, concurrent engineering, and new product development processes. Best performers are compared to below-average performers in our study sample. Critical-to-safety practices and major issues for enhancing product safety are discussed.

Abstract
This chapter discusses the qualitative and quantitative findings on product safety strategy, product safety culture, concurrent engineering, NPD processes, and product safety performance. The key findings are presented and discussed first, followed by triangulation analysis between qualitative and quantitative findings.

Chapter 8. Implications and Recommendations
Abstract
This chapter presents input for more responsible management of product innovation activities to various stakeholders of product safety, especially regulators/policy makers, manufacturers, retailers, and consumers. The immediate benefits are a better understanding of how to develop products that are safe—with obvious benefits for manufacturing firms and their customers. It also provides empirical guidance for governments to regulate industries properly and effectively.

Chapter 9. Conclusions and Limitations
Abstract
Based on the hypothesis testing and triangulation analysis of the quantitative and qualitative findings of our research on product safety and new product development, this chapter summarizes the conclusions, the academic contributions, and limitations of the research and proposes future research directions in responsible product innovation.
