Abstract

This investigation concentrates on slip distribution, aftershocks, mainshock location and related co-seismic faults for seven continental large earthquakes in the Persian plateau. Most of the earthquakes (M S 5.7–7.7, 1981–2005) with both measurable surface slip along a mature rupture and a precisely aftershock surveying with a local seismological network in Iran are evaluated. In most of the case studies, we observe an acceptable correlation between maximum surface slip along the fault trace and the asperity, an area which is recognized as an obvious gap or an area with lack of aftershocks on a fault plane. On the other hand, we conclude that the aftershocks which are associated with immeasurable or smaller surface slips mainly concentrate at the outside of the asperities. Also the mainshocks in most of the earthquakes are in neighboring with the big asperities and segment the co-seismic faults. We could see a gradual increase in the co-seismic slip when the magnitude of the earthquake increases. But examples with defuse aftershocks and with no specific pattern are also found.
