The knowledge of characteristics and profile of a company is the key to plan its software process improvement. It helps focusing efforts to promote alignment with organizational culture and to support the consolidation of best practices already implemented. This paper presents a systematic literature review to identify evidences in the literature related to the challenges and opportunities of the adoption of software process improvement in small and medium enterprises. The results from the study indicate that there are relevant issues that can be considered in the effective adoption of software engineering best practices in small and medium enterprises.
