The International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) Workshop on Syntactic and Structural Pattern Recognition (SSPR), was held in Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA, during 13–15 June 1990. This was the most recent in a bi-yearly series of workshops sponsored by IAPR Technical Committee No. 2 (TC-2) on SSPR, that historically has attracted theoreticians from Europe, Japan, and the U.S. SSPR methods emphasize the use of formal a priori models of the symbolic content of images or signals. For many types of complex printed and handwritten documents, SSPR methods are natural and helpful. For this reason, the organizers decided to place special emphasis on applications to document image analysis, and invited IAPR TC-11 on Text Processing to co-sponsor the workshop.
