Strength Behavior of Welded Impellers of Centrifugal Compressors Under Long-Term Operation Conditions

Abstract

The paper investigates the effect of different variants of welded joints and regions with lack of fusion (LOF) on the overall strength of the centrifugal compressor wheel of a booster compressor station. A fractured large-sized welded wheel was examined using multivariant calculations by the finite element method (FEM) realized by the commercial ANSYS Workbench 19.2 software package. The results of computations include: carrying capacity of the basic and cover discs with and without blades, and wheel deformation mode depending on welded joint types and amounts of failures. The performed numerical analysis made it possible to clarify the reasons of the wheel failure under operation conditions, confirmed by metallographic and fractographic studies.
