Convolutional codes and their encoders are examined in a symbolic dynamics setting. Two previously unrelated areas of dynamics are used. The first is the Adler-Coppersmith-Hassner formulation of the finite memory channel coding problem. The second is the Kitchens-Schmidt use of algebraic duality to define and examine algebraic dynamical systems. Convolutional codes and their encoders are seen as lying in the intersection of these two areas. Codes, encoders, memory, distances and other invariants are examined in this framework.
