The Great Flood of 1997 in Poland: The Truth and Myth

In the second half of June 1997, the weather in Poland was influenced by cyclonic precipitation of high intensity and depth, which occurred throughout the country, except in northern and north-western Poland. The heavy rains of July `97 in Poland could be added to the list of the largest known rains in the officially recorded history of the Earth (Fig.1) [7]. The highest precipitation (585 mm) was recorded at Lysa Hora (Czech Republic) from July 5 to 9, while in the Polish drainage basin of the Odra River, it amounted to 484 mm in Kamienica and 455 mm in Miédzygórze (Fig.2) [8].
