In every industrial process variability is present and leads to the practice of setting tolerances to define what is to be expected from the process. Thus all classes of work are subjected to tests of one kind or another which embrace tests on raw materials and components through to the finished equipment to determine performance and establish whether the tolerance criteria are being met.
