In Chapters 9 and 13 (bivariate distributions and logarithmic graphs) it was seen that on occasion data were found to be related, if not perfectly, by a theoretical law in the form of an equation. The imperfections of measurement in addition to the influence of other factors can cause divergencies between theory and practice. Study of these errors has led statisticians into advanced techniques and the purpose of this chapter is to lay a simple foundation for the student in that direction.
